The terminal your toolbox deserves!

When you’re on the construction site and things need to be done quickly, safely, and neatly, you reach for the WAGO 221. This terminal is not just a connector; it’s the answer to everything that annoys you when wiring. No screwing, no crimping, no drama. Just insert the cable, close the lever, done.

  • Transparent body: you can immediately see if the cable is seated correctly. Check at a glance. No guessing.
  • Ultra-light lever technology: open with one finger, even with gloves on. No effort, no tools needed.
  • Universal cable acceptance: whether fine-stranded, multi-stranded, or solid, from 0.14 to 4 mm², the WAGO 221 takes it all.
  • Compact & space-saving: fits in any junction box, behind any light, in any corner. And holds firmly.
  • With test opening: for quick voltage checks without detours – directly at the contact.

The WAGO 221 series is not just a clever connection solution – it is the epitome of modern electrical installation. Anyone working on site knows the situation: time pressure, tight boxes, different conductor types – and yet everything must be wired safely, quickly, and neatly. This is exactly where the 221 shows its full strength. With its transparent housing, you can immediately see if the conductor is correctly inserted. The lever mechanism allows tool-free opening and closing with one finger – even with gloves or in cold conditions. And the best part: it accepts solid, multi-stranded, and fine-stranded conductors equally, from 0.14 to 4 mm². This makes it ideal for classic installations in junction boxes, light connections, or retrofitting in the smart home sector. No screwing, no fiddling – just lever up, conductor in, lever down. Done.

Especially during renovations or extensions, where different conductor types meet, the WAGO 221 shows what it can do. You don’t need to press ferrules or check screw connections – you get a permanently secure connection in seconds. The compact design makes it the perfect companion in tight boxes or behind lights, where every millimetre counts. And if you need to measure: the integrated test opening allows direct voltage testing without disconnecting the connection. This saves time, increases safety, and makes fault finding more efficient. The terminal is not only designed for professionals – ambitious DIYers also benefit from the simple handling and clear feedback when inserting the conductor.

The heart of the WAGO 221 is the proven spring clamp technology, specifically a cage-clamp spring that ensures constant contact pressure – regardless of conductor shape, material, or diameter. Unlike screw terminals, where the contact can loosen due to vibrations or temperature changes, the connection in the 221 remains permanently stable. The spring automatically adapts to the conductor and ensures a gas-tight, corrosion-resistant connection – without the need for retightening. This means less maintenance, more safety, and longer service life. Compared to classic insulation displacement connectors, the 221 offers more flexibility as it is reusable and suitable for various conductor types. This combination of convenience, safety, and versatility makes the WAGO 221 a real gamechanger in electrical installation – and a product no installation toolbox should be without.

The WAGO 221 connection terminals are not intended for direct use in distribution cabinets or on DIN rails without additional measures. In such environments, higher requirements apply for mechanical stability, continuous load, and standard-compliant wiring according to DIN EN 61439. The 221 terminals are primarily designed for quick, flexible wiring in junction boxes, light connections, repairs, and temporary installations – and they are unbeatable exactly there.

BUT: with the appropriate mounting adapter for the DIN rail (e.g. WAGO 221-500), the terminals can be securely and standard-compliantly installed in distribution cabinets. The adapter ensures a firm, vibration-proof attachment on the DIN rail and enables a clean, structured installation – ideal for test setups, temporary extensions, or special solutions where the flexibility of the 221 is required. This turns the flexible connection terminal into a fully-fledged solution for the control cabinet – provided it is correctly mounted and used.
Application example

You drive to the construction site in the morning, as every day. The thermos flask is within reach, the radio plays quietly, and your toolbox contains everything you need. In the lid compartment, just above the screwdriver set, lie your WAGO 221 terminals. You always keep them there ready to hand, sorted by size: 2-, 3-, 5-, and also the large 10-conductor terminal, which you use less often but never want to miss. Today you’re going to a multi-family house, an old building, partially modernised. The tasks are mixed: connecting lights, retrofitting boxes, integrating a few smart home components. You know you’re dealing with different conductor types: rigid NYM cables, flexible control cables, old installations that are not always logically wired. In such situations, you reach for the WAGO 221. The terminals make your work easier without you having to think much about it.

In one of the boxes, you find an older installation that you did yourself a few years ago. The customer now wants an additional function: the outdoor lighting should no longer be controlled only by the switch but also by a motion detector. For this, one conductor must be replaced and a new one introduced. In the past, you would have worked with screw terminals, which meant: lid off, screwdriver out, unscrew the terminal, hoping nothing breaks. Today you simply open the lever of the WAGO 221, pull out the old conductor, insert the new one and close the lever again. No tools, no effort, no damage. The terminal remains intact and can be reused. You save not only time but also avoid unnecessary material waste. The new function is quickly integrated, the box stays tidy, and the customer is surprised how fast it went. He had expected a longer interruption, maybe even chiselling work. Instead, the solution is elegant and neat.

In the afternoon, you go to the basement. There, a small distribution box for the garden lighting is to be installed. You have the suitable adapter for the DIN rail with you. The terminals snap on cleanly, the cables are routed clearly. The large 10-conductor terminal is used because several circuits need to be combined. You work focused but without haste. The terminals work as they should. You don’t have to retighten or correct anything. The spring technology ensures a gas-tight connection that remains stable even with temperature fluctuations and vibrations. You remember earlier installations with screw terminals where the screw heads regularly broke, the conductors were loose, and you had to replace the terminals completely. Today, that is no longer necessary. You close the distribution box, document the work, and the day is almost over. You have achieved a lot, and you know you can rely on your materials. The WAGO 221 helped you do that, simply by function, without fuss.
