Smart lighting feels best when it works as simply as a normal switch but still reliably automates in the background. This Zigbee flush-mounted push sensor combines exactly that: local control at the wall and operation via a Zigbee system, without being tied to a specific house wiring.

  • Zigbee 3.0 radio: The switch communicates via Zigbee 3.0 and connects to a compatible Zigbee gateway, ensuring stable switching, automations, and status messages even with many devices on the network.
  • Neutral conductor optional: It supports wiring with or without a neutral conductor, making it suitable for both older installations and modern wiring systems.
  • 2-channel switching: As a 2-channel version, it switches 2 x 10 A and is therefore suitable for typical lighting circuits, switched socket circuits within the permissible load, or other simple on/off consumers.
  • Power data for planning: It operates at 100–240 V AC and switches LED loads up to 400 W or resistive loads up to 10 A.
  • Detach relay function: With a decoupled relay, a smart light remains permanently powered in neutral conductor mode, while the switch can still trigger scenes and automations without cutting power to the light.
  • Flush-mounted installation: The 86x80 mm format is designed for flush mounting, has a matte white surface, and is intended for indoor use with IP20 protection.

Function and system integration

The SONOFF ZBM5-2C-80W is a Zigbee-based flush-mounted wall switch in a 2-channel format that operates like a classic push button and can simultaneously be integrated into a Zigbee smart home. It requires a Zigbee gateway for control; in typical setups, operation is via an app and automations, with voice control also possible through connected platforms. For open setups, pairing with Home Assistant installations via compatible Zigbee USB sticks is planned, allowing local switching commands with low latency. The device itself has an on/off button; holding it for about 5 seconds starts pairing mode, and a blue LED indicates pairing status and connection issues.

Electrical design

Three points are crucial for design: voltage, current, and load type. The switch is rated for 100–240 V~ at 50/60 Hz and switches up to 10 A maximum resistive load per channel, making it ideal for many classic lighting and switching tasks. For LED loads, it supports up to 400 W at 240 V or up to 200 W at 100 V, which is an important guideline for dimensioning LED drivers and retrofit lamps. In operation without a neutral conductor, a minimum load of 3 W applies because the device provides a small auxiliary supply via the load in this wiring type; loads that are too small or unsuitable may cause glowing or flickering. The load type is also important: in neutral conductor-free mode, inductive loads such as fans are not supported because their switching behaviour and reactive components can disrupt operation.

Neutral conductor mode vs. without neutral conductor

The choice of wiring type affects not only the minimum load but also the role in the Zigbee network. With a neutral conductor, the switch acts as a Zigbee router, enhancing the range and robustness of the mesh network, which can be noticeable especially in larger apartments or with many Zigbee devices. In this wiring, there is no minimum load requirement, and smart lights can also be used because you can power them permanently via the "Detach Relay" while the wall switch continues to control scenes. Without a neutral conductor, the switch operates as a Zigbee end device, has the 3 W minimum load, and does not support smart lights, explicitly including dimmable, colour-changing or otherwise electronically controlled lights as well as LED strips with integrated controllers; here the safe choice is a compatible, non-smart light with sufficient power consumption. If you later change the wiring type, resetting and relearning is advisable so the device reliably uses the appropriate mode.

Mechanics, environment and selection criteria

The 86x80 mm format is relevant for mechanical planning: this version is designed with an 86x80 mm front dimension, matching the corresponding box and frame standard. The device is intended for indoor use and has IP20 protection, so it is not suitable for damp rooms with splash water or outdoor areas. The housing is made of PC+CRS and the device is white. The installation depth is approx. 40 mm, fitting standard switch boxes. Operating temperatures range from -10 °C to 40 °C with relative humidity from 5% to 95% (non-condensing). When choosing within the ZBM5 series, the number of channels (here 2-channel) is the first practical criterion, then the format (86x80 mm), and finally whether a neutral conductor is available, as this affects minimum load, network topology, and the sensible use of smart lights.

Manufacturer

SONOFF develops smart home components that focus strongly on radio standards such as Zigbee and everyday-friendly wall control concepts. The product lines are structured with several channel and form factor variants within a series, simplifying planning in mixed installations. A typical focus is on combining local control, app operation, and automation functions, allowing classic electrical installation and smart home logic to be cleanly integrated. The wide availability of compatible gateways and integration into common ecosystems often supports both easy commissioning and later system expansion.
