The Zigbee push-button sensor for flush-mounted installation combines a compact design with flexible integration into smart lighting systems, enabling easy operation and control without complex wiring.

  • Zigbee 3.0 Wireless: Stable integration into Zigbee gateways for reliable control and automations in the smart home.
  • Neutral conductor optional: Operation with or without neutral conductor possible, suitable for modern and older installations.
  • Performance data: Switches LED loads up to 400 W and resistive loads up to 10 A at 100–240 V AC.
  • Detach relay function: Allows permanent power supply to smart lights in neutral conductor operation while simultaneously controlling via the button.
  • Flush-mounted installation: Compact 86x80 mm format with approx. 40 mm installation depth for standard switch boxes, protection class IP20 for indoor use.
  • Zigbee network role: As a Zigbee router with neutral conductor, it improves mesh range and network stability; without neutral conductor, it acts as an end device.
  • Operation and commissioning: Local button for on/off, pairing mode via long press, LED indicator for connection status.

Smart lighting feels best when it works simply like a normal button but still reliably automates in the background. This Zigbee flush-mounted push-button sensor combines exactly that: local operation on the wall and control via the Zigbee system, without being tied to a specific house wiring.

  • Zigbee 3.0 Wireless: The switch communicates via Zigbee 3.0 and connects to a compatible Zigbee gateway to ensure stable switching, automations, and status reports even with many devices on the network.
  • Neutral conductor optional: It supports wiring with neutral conductor as well as operation without neutral conductor, making it suitable for both older installations and modern wiring.
  • Single switching channel: As a single-channel version, it switches 1 x 10 A and is thus suitable for typical lighting circuits, switched socket circuits within the permissible load, or other simple on/off consumers.
  • Performance data for planning: It operates at 100–240 V AC and switches LED loads up to 400 W or resistive loads up to 10 A.
  • Detach relay function: With a detached relay, a smart light in neutral conductor operation remains permanently powered, while the button can still trigger scenes and automations without cutting power to the light.
  • Flush-mounted installation: The 86x80 mm format version is designed for flush mounting, features a matte white surface, and is intended for indoor use with protection class IP20.

Function and system integration

The SONOFF ZBM5-1C-80W is a Zigbee-based flush-mounted wall switch in a single-channel format, operated like a classic push-button and simultaneously integrated into a Zigbee smart home. It requires a Zigbee gateway for control; in typical setups, operation is via an app and automations, with voice control also possible through connected platforms. For open setups, pairing with Home Assistant installations via compatible Zigbee USB sticks is intended, allowing local and low-latency processing of switching commands. The device itself has an on/off button; holding it for about 5 seconds starts pairing mode, and a blue LED indicates pairing status and connection issues.

Electrical design

Three points are crucial for the design: voltage, current, and load type. The switch is designed for 100–240 V~ at 50/60 Hz and switches up to 10 A maximum resistive load, making it suitable for many classic lighting and switching tasks. For LED loads, up to 400 W at 240 V or up to 200 W at 100 V are specified, which is an important guideline for dimensioning LED drivers and retrofit lamps. In operation without neutral conductor, a minimum load of 3 W applies because the device realises a small auxiliary power supply via the load in this wiring type; too small or unsuitable loads can cause glowing or flickering. The load type is also important: in operation without neutral conductor, inductive loads such as fans are not intended, as their switching behaviour and reactive components can disturb operation.

Neutral conductor mode vs. without neutral conductor

The choice of wiring type affects not only the minimum load but also the role in the Zigbee network. With neutral conductor, the switch operates as a Zigbee router, thereby enhancing range and robustness of the mesh network, which can be noticeable especially in larger apartments or with many Zigbee devices. In this wiring, there is no minimum load requirement, and smart lights can be used because you can supply them permanently via the "Detach Relay" while the wall button continues to switch scenes. Without neutral conductor, the switch operates as a Zigbee end device, has the 3 W minimum load, and does not support smart lights, explicitly including dimmable, colour-changing, or otherwise electronically controlled lights as well as LED strips with integrated controllers; here the safe choice is a compatible, non-smart light with sufficient power consumption. If you later change the wiring type, resetting and re-pairing is advisable so the device reliably uses the appropriate mode.

Mechanics, environment, and selection criteria

The 86x80 mm format is relevant for mechanical planning: this version is designed with an 86x80 mm front dimension, fitting the corresponding box and frame standard. The device is intended for indoor use and has IP20, so it is not suitable for damp rooms with splashing water or outdoor areas. The housing is made of PC+CRS and the device is finished in matte white. The installation depth is approx. 40 mm, fitting standard switch boxes. Operating temperatures are -10 °C to 40 °C with relative humidity from 5 % to 95 % (non-condensing). When selecting within the ZBM5 series, the number of channels (single, double, or triple) is the primary practical decision, followed by the format (80 or 86), and finally whether a neutral conductor is available, as this affects minimum load, network topology, and the sensible use of smart lights.

Manufacturer

SONOFF develops smart home components that strongly focus on wireless standards like Zigbee and on everyday practical operation concepts at the wall. The product lines are structured so that there are several channel and form factor variants within a series, simplifying planning in mixed installations. A typical focus is on combining local operation, app control, and automation functions, allowing classic electrical installation and smart home logic to be cleanly integrated. Due to the wide availability of compatible gateways and integration into common ecosystems, both easy commissioning and later system expansion are often supported.
