The Shelly Wall Display XL replaces conventional switches and control centres with a modern, configurable interface. You can directly switch lights, sockets, blinds, and other devices, display sensor values such as temperature or humidity, trigger scenes, and start automations. The user interface is organised in tiles that you can customise individually. Rooms and floors can be clearly structured so you always keep an overview. Hardware and performance

Inside works a powerful quad-core processor, specially optimised for real-time communication and smart home control. The operating system is based on an embedded Linux derivative with Shelly’s own GUI engine. The software is regularly updated via OTA. Power consumption is about 5 watts during operation and under 2 watts in standby. The display brightness can be adjusted automatically or manually, depending on the time of day or ambient light.

Home Assistant integration

Particularly exciting is the direct integration with Home Assistant. The display can show a complete Home Assistant dashboard – directly on the touchscreen, without additional apps or detours. After a firmware update, you can activate the Home Assistant function and enter the URL of your dashboard, ideally in kiosk mode so that no distracting menus are visible. The display then shows your familiar HA interface including cards, sensors, switches, and scenes. You can switch anytime between the Shelly interface and the HA dashboard. For complex dashboards, a specially optimised view is recommended, as the display is powerful but not a full-fledged tablet. Animations or very large dashboards can affect performance. Additionally, the display can be integrated into Home Assistant via MQTT and REST API to process button events, sensor values, or status messages. This way, the display becomes not only a display but an active part of your automations.

To display a Home Assistant dashboard, you need firmware version 2.3.0-beta or higher, a locally accessible Home Assistant server, and ideally a valid SSL certificate if you use HTTPS. A lightweight Lovelace dashboard ensures optimal performance.

• Update firmware: Open the display’s web interface via its IP address and update the firmware under "Settings - Firmware".
• Activate Home Assistant integration: Go to "Settings - Network - Home Assistant" and confirm activation.
• Enter dashboard URL: Enter your dashboard’s URL, e.g.: http://192.168.xxx.yyy:8123/lovelace/walldisplay?kiosk
• Perform soft reboot: After saving, the display restarts and shows your HA dashboard.
• Switch between UIs: You can switch anytime between the Shelly interface and the HA dashboard via a small bar at the bottom of the screen.

Everyday use and comparison

In everyday use, you can switch individual lamps or entire groups, control dimmers and RGB LEDs, or integrate motion detectors. In combination with Shelly TRV or Shelly Plus H&T, you can control your heating directly on the display and see current temperature and humidity values. Security functions such as door contacts, motion detectors, or alarm systems can also be integrated. Scenes like "Movie night," "Good morning," or "Leaving home" can be triggered with a single tap to control multiple devices simultaneously.
