With the MDT homeXpert®, you can easily transform an existing building or rental apartment into an energy-efficient smart home thanks to wireless radio connection. The homeXpert server as the system’s control centre – naturally KNX Data Secure

The homeXpert server is the core of the system when KNX RF+ devices are not to be used as an extension of a wired installation but as a standalone radio system – without extensive renovation or wiring. It supports KNX Data Secure and thus secure communication between the KNX RF+ devices.

Operation, structure, and functionality

In the web-based, free homeXpert tool, you can integrate devices into the system within minutes and assign them to the created rooms and functions. Once the devices are configured in the homeXpert tool, you can use them directly in the homeXpert app after uploading. Control your lighting, shading, scenes, or room temperature conveniently via smartphone or tablet. The app is available for iOS and Android.
For smart automations, an integrated time switch logic with 10 channels is available, allowing tasks such as roller shutter times, night setback, or time-controlled scenes to be centrally mapped directly. Additionally, the server offers a 12-channel room temperature controller (PWM), which is especially interesting if you want to centrally control your radiator thermostats by time, mode, and setpoint and are looking for a uniform control basis.

Easily expandable at any time

MDT stands for KNX as an open standard, so KNX RF products from other manufacturers can also be integrated via the homeXpert. Through the platform “Works with homeXpert,” interfaces for further manufacturers can be integrated into the system. Network, radio, and security

Connection to the LAN is via an RJ45 socket and TCP/IP, allowing the server to be cleanly integrated into existing networks and router structures. As a KNX-IP interface, it provides up to 4 simultaneous connections, which is important for parallel use, for example when programming, visualisation, and another service access simultaneously. On the radio side, it operates in the 868 MHz band with a frequency range of 868.0 to 868.6 MHz, 10 dBm output power, and a sensitivity of > 105 dBm, creating the typical conditions for stable radio telegrams indoors. The radio range of the homeXpert server is approximately 150 - 400 metres in open field. In buildings, the range may vary due to structural conditions.
As a compatibility mode, KNX RF S-Mode is provided, which is relevant for classic KNX commissioning and object logic. Security is no longer an add-on in radio and IP systems but a planning requirement; therefore, support for KNX Data Secure is a clear decision criterion, for example if you work in multi-party environments where unprotected telegrams are not acceptable.

Technical data for installation and planning

The homeXpert server can be used near the router or in the distribution board or technical niche. Thanks to its compact design of 70 x 70 x 35 mm (H x W x D), it requires very little space. The installation position is arbitrary, which facilitates placement in distributors. Power supply is via USB-C, making operation easy to integrate into low-voltage infrastructures if 5 V power supply is already available or a suitable power supply unit is used. The IP20 protection class clearly indicates that the device is intended for dry indoor areas, not for outdoor environments or damp technical rooms. The operating ambient temperature is 0 to 45 °C.
