The SMART CONNECT KNX e-charge II from ISE is a gateway for seamless integration of e-charging stations into KNX smart home systems. It enables intelligent load management, flexible connection via IP or RS485, and fully local control without the cloud – ideal for energy-efficient and data-secure charging at home.

  • Integration of charging points into KNX systems: You can directly integrate up to five compatible charging points into your KNX smart home system – perfect for intelligent energy management.
  • Flexible interfaces: Depending on the model, the connection of the charging points is via IP or RS485 (Modbus), providing high compatibility with various charging stations.
  • Visualisation and control: You can conveniently control the charging process via visualisations, e.g. through touch panels or visualisation software within the KNX system.
  • Load management: The gateway supports intelligent load management to avoid overloads and optimally utilise the available energy.

The SMART CONNECT KNX e-charge II expands your KNX system with a powerful interface for electromobility and photovoltaics. It connects charging points, solar inverters, and solar storage in one device, enabling holistic energy management within the building. Up to five charging points, five inverters, and one solar storage can be integrated simultaneously per gateway – regardless of manufacturer. The combination of different brands is easily possible, giving you maximum flexibility in selecting your hardware.

The charging point integration is comprehensive. You receive detailed status values such as current, power, energy consumption, duration of the last charge, and the current charge status. Additionally, states like "Connected", "Charging", "Charging completed", or the general charging point status are transmitted. Temperature values and warnings in case of overheating are also available. Furthermore, the system provides information on vehicle identification (EVCCID) and detects RFID tags, enabling precise user assignment. Charging processes can be started, stopped, or interrupted directly via the KNX system – without additional software or cloud services.

The gateway also proves versatile in photovoltaic connection. It supports up to five solar inverters per device, also manufacturer-independent. The collected data includes current power values, generated energy, and temperature information of the inverters. This allows you to monitor your PV system’s energy production in real time and integrate it into your KNX visualisation system. The integration is fully local and without external servers, enhancing data security and improving system stability.

Another key element is the integration of a solar storage system. Here too, all relevant status values are provided: charge and discharge power, energy flow, and the state of charge (SoC). These details are crucial if you aim to optimise your energy management for self-consumption. By combining charging points, inverters, and storage, a closed system is created that intelligently controls and coordinates energy flows.

The integrated load management is designed for both static and dynamic operation. In static load management (SLM), a fixed power limit is defined that must not be exceeded. Dynamic load management (DLM), on the other hand, flexibly adjusts the charging power according to the current grid situation. Both variants can be configured directly in the KNX system. Additionally, an unbalanced load management is integrated, ensuring that phase loads in the power grid remain balanced – an important aspect for single-phase charging.

Grid-supportive control allows targeted reduction or shifting of charging power to avoid grid overloads or respond to external signals. This means the gateway meets the requirements of modern energy grids and supports a future-proof infrastructure. Charging points can be prioritised, with priorities even switchable during operation. For example, you can specify that a particular vehicle is charged preferentially, such as company cars or emergency vehicles.

Several charging strategies are available for different use cases. The "Immediate" strategy starts charging directly at maximum power, while "ECO" aims for the most efficient use of solar power. The Boost mode allows short-term fast charging when grid capacity permits. Additionally, the system supports phase switching between single- and three-phase charging, which is especially useful for PV surplus charging or weak grid supply.

Fault messages are recorded system-wide – not only from the charging points but also from inverters, solar storage, and the gateway itself. These messages can be integrated into KNX visualisations or used for notifications. This way, you always keep an overview of the status of your energy infrastructure and can react quickly if necessary.

The hardware of the gateway is designed for practical use. An integrated RS485 adapter enables direct connection of devices via Modbus RTU. Additionally, a dual IP switch is installed, simplifying network connection – especially when network ports in the control cabinet are limited. The entire configuration is done via ETS, including all communication objects, parameters, and security functions. KNX Secure is fully integrated and ensures encrypted communication within the KNX network.

Another advantage is the system’s update capability. New functions and extensions can be added via firmware updates without needing to replace hardware. This makes the gateway future-proof and adaptable to new requirements or device generations. Compatible charging points, inverters, and storage devices can be found on the manufacturer’s product website, which is regularly updated.

Overall, the SMART CONNECT KNX e-charge II offers a comprehensive solution for integrating electromobility and renewable energy into building automation. It combines high technical flexibility with easy configuration and reliable operation. Whether in single-family homes, multi-family buildings, or commercial applications – the gateway lays the foundation for intelligent, sustainable energy management based on KNX.
