For controlling infrared-capable devices via the KNX system, this compact KNX-IR gateway offers a well-thought-out integration into existing installations and enables flexible incorporation of home entertainment systems into building automation.

  • Integrated KNX-TP interface: The gateway is connected directly to the KNX-TP bus and allows control of infrared devices via the KNX system without additional interface components.
  • Infrared transmission channels with 256 control commands: The device offers 4 channels for IR signal output and supports up to 256 different IR commands per channel to control devices such as TVs, DVDs, air conditioners, or fans.
  • Configurable IR learning function via PC software: With the PC software and the IR learner, IR codes from remote controls can be learned, managed, and transferred to the gateway, allowing flexible configuration of individual control commands.
  • Direct bus power supply and compact design: The device is powered via the KNX bus with 21–30 V DC, has a low power consumption (<20 mA dynamic), and is suitable for installation in standard flush-mounted boxes (60 mm or 86 mm).
  • Software-supported group addressing and command management: Control commands can be group addressed in the software, equipped with transmission time and delay, and combined with up to five subfunctions to map complex control sequences.

The GVS BTIRF-02/00.2 KNX-IR gateway is a compact infrared gateway for integrating IR-controlled home entertainment devices such as hi-fi systems, televisions, or DVD players into KNX building automation systems. Through direct connection to the KNX bus, it enables control of these devices via KNX push-button sensors or touch panels, seamlessly integrating the operation of IR devices into building control.

Technically, the gateway features an integrated KNX-TP interface, ensuring stable and direct bus communication without additional interface components. The device supports transmission of up to 256 IR commands, which can be configured via the associated PC software and downloaded to the gateway. Control commands can be represented in the software as 1-bit or 1-byte commands, where 1-bit objects address individual IR commands directly and 1-byte objects can combine several commands via scene control.

For configuration and management of IR commands, extensive PC software is available, used together with an IR learning module (IR learner). With the IR learner, IR codes from remote controls can be read out, saved, edited, and tested in the software. The gateway itself can manage up to 20 IR emitter devices, while the software supports up to 40 different IR-controlled devices with up to 40 key commands each. IR commands can be organised in the software within a command library and assigned to individual channels. Each command can be assigned up to five subfunctions, enabling control of more complex device functions.

IR signals are transmitted via up to four output channels with a range of up to 5 metres. The IR emitters are designed for mounting in standard flush-mounted boxes (60 mm or 86 mm) and feature precise alignment of the IR transmission elements to ensure reliable signal transmission. Transmission time and delays between individual IR commands can be set individually to implement protection functions for devices, for example, by sending on and rotation commands for fans with a time delay.

Connection to the KNX system is made via the EIB bus connection terminal, with the gateway connected directly to the KNX bus. Parameterisation and downloading of the configuration are carried out via the PC software, which also offers a debugging function for monitoring and testing group address communication. The gateway does not support KNX Secure functions.

In practice, the GVS KNX-IR gateway enables seamless integration and control of IR-controlled devices in KNX installations without modifying the devices themselves. This facilitates integration of existing entertainment electronics into modern building automation systems and extends control options to KNX-based operating devices. The flexible configurability of IR commands and extensive parameterisation options allow individual adaptation to the specific requirements of the respective application.

The associated PC software offers a clear user interface for managing IR devices, commands, and group assignments. Nearly all common remote controls on the market can be captured via the IR learning mode, with the software supporting up to 10 telegram series with 150 group addresses each. The software enables both manual and cyclic sending of telegrams for diagnosis and configuration. Configuration of IR commands includes assigning commands to channels and scenes as well as setting transmission times and delays to map complex control sequences.

The device is compact and suitable for installation in standard flush-mounted boxes. The IR transmitters must be mounted so that the IR receivers of the controlled devices are reliably reached to ensure secure transmission of commands. LEDs on the device indicate operating status and programming. Power supply is via the KNX bus; no additional auxiliary power supply is required.

The combination of direct KNX bus connection, extensive IR command management, and practical parameterisation makes the GVS BTIRF-02/00.2 KNX-IR gateway a flexible solution for integrating IR-controlled devices into KNX building automation systems.
