For professional use in KNX systems, the GVS ARSA-04/16.S switching actuator offers a well-thought-out design with multiple switching outputs and a construction focused on easy installation. It is functionally equipped and allows flexible integration into existing automation solutions.

  • High switching capacity with 16 A per channel: The switching actuator controls up to 4 independent AC loads with a rated voltage of 250 V AC and a rated current of 16 A per output, suitable for lighting, heating control, and signalling devices.
  • Extensive integrated KNX functions: Supports switching, status feedback, scene control, on and off delay, preset commands, logic functions (AND, OR, XOR), threshold and forced control functions for flexible automation scenarios.
  • KNX Secure compatibility: Integrated KNX Data Secure function ensures secure data communication on the KNX bus without additional security components.
  • Manual operation and status indication: Each output features a manual operation button with LED indicator for direct switching status control and physical addressing via programming button and LED.
  • Configurable behaviour on bus voltage interruption: The switching actuator allows setting the output state after bus voltage failure and return, including options for unchanged state, contact opening, or closing.

The GVS ARSA-04/16.S KNX switching actuator is a modular, 4-channel switching actuator with a rated current of 16 A per channel, designed for use in KNX systems with KNX-TP bus communication and supports KNX Data Secure for secured telegram transmission. It enables switching of up to four independent electrical loads with a rated voltage of 250 V AC (50/60 Hz) and is equipped with high-current magnetic relays that guarantee a mechanical lifespan of over 1 million switching cycles and an electrical lifespan of over 100,000 switching cycles for resistive loads.

Integration into the KNX system is done directly via a KNX bus terminal, so no additional interface component is required. The bus voltage is supplied via the KNX bus at 21–30 V DC, with a maximum bus current below 12 mA. The load connections are designed as screw terminals and support conductor cross-sections from 0.2 to 4.0 mm² single-core or 0.2 to 2.5 mm² multi-core. The compact design with a footprint of 4 modular units (72 x 90 x 64 mm) facilitates mounting on a 35 mm DIN rail in distribution cabinets.

Each output channel can be individually parameterised and offers extensive functions configured via ETS software. These include timed switching functions with on and off delays, allowing flexible adjustment of switching times, as well as scene and preset controls via 8-bit and 1-bit commands for easy integration into complex automation scenarios. Additionally, two logic functions (AND, OR, XOR) are available per channel, enabling linking of switching states and direct implementation of automation logic within the actuator, thus reducing the need for external logic modules.

The switching actuator supports status feedback, providing the current switching state of the outputs via KNX communication objects. This enables reliable visualisation and monitoring of load states in the automation system. Furthermore, threshold functions are implemented that allow switching depending on certain limit values, as well as forced control and safety functions that securely control the outputs’ behaviour in case of faults or defined conditions. The option to invert the outputs increases flexibility for adaptation to different load types and control requirements.

For staircase lighting functions, special time controls with warning and adjustable lighting duration are integrated, facilitating use in lighting installations with time-limited operation. After a bus voltage interruption, a preferred state can be defined for each output (unchanged, open or closed) to ensure a safe and predictable system state upon power restoration.

On-site operation is carried out via manual switches on each channel, allowing direct manual control of the outputs. Programming of the physical KNX address is done via a programming button with LED indicator, signalling the address assignment status and normal operation. The green LED indicates normal operation, while the red LED supports address assignment.

The comprehensive parameterisation options in ETS allow practical adaptation to a wide range of applications in building automation, from simple lighting control to complex integration into security and comfort systems. The support of KNX Data Secure ensures secured communication against manipulation and unauthorised eavesdropping.

Thanks to its compact design, flexible parameterisation, and secure KNX connection, the GVS ARSA-04/16.S KNX switching actuator provides a practical solution for controlling switching loads in modern KNX building automation projects and offers installers and planners a reliable basis for diverse switching tasks.

The switching contacts are designed for a maximum switching current of 16 A and comply with the requirements of EN 60947-4-1 (AC-1) as well as EN 60669 for fluorescent lamp loads (16 AX). The switching times are approximately 55 ms per output, with delays of 30 ms when switching on and 25 ms when switching off, enabling fast and reliable switching response. The loads can be resistive, inductive, or capacitive, whereby special care must be taken with inductive and capacitive loads to maximise the relay contacts’ lifespan.

The integrated logic functions allow complex linking of switching states to be realised directly in the device, enabling, for example, linking of switches or sensors without additional logic modules. The scene control supports activation of predefined switching states, which can be used especially in comfort and lighting systems for quick adaptation to different usage situations. The preset function enables quick reset to defined output states.

The forced control function allows overriding the normal control, for example, for maintenance or safety purposes. The threshold function can be used to evaluate measured values to trigger switching operations depending on certain limit values. The safety function ensures that defined safe states are assumed in case of bus voltage failure or faults, increasing operational safety.

Parameterisation is carried out via ETS, where extensive settings are possible for each channel, including defining behaviour on bus voltage interruption, setting logic functions, scenes, presets, thresholds, and safety parameters. Cyclic transmission of status messages can be configured to control system communication as needed and optimise bus traffic.

Mounting is on a 35 mm DIN rail according to DIN EN 60715, allowing simple and standardised installation in distribution cabinets. The device is designed for operation in closed distribution boards and should be protected from moisture, dirt, and mechanical damage. Manual operation enables fast and uncomplicated control directly at the device, which is especially advantageous during commissioning and maintenance.
