LED lighting elements from Gira: What you should know before installation

LED lighting elements are a practical addition to many Gira switch inserts. They provide better orientation in the dark and can also indicate whether a device is currently active – for example, a light or a socket. However, for these functions to work reliably, certain requirements must be met. Here you will learn what you should pay attention to.

Two functions – different requirements

Gira LED elements can basically do two things:

Illuminate: The LED lights up independently of the switching state, e.g. permanently or in the dark. This is especially helpful in corridors, staircases, or work areas.
Indicate: The LED shows the switching state of a connected device – i.e. whether the light is switched on, for example.

Which function can actually be used depends on the switch insert and the wiring.

Requirement: The right switch insert

Not every switch insert is suitable for every function. The most important points:

Neutral terminal present? For the indication function, the switch insert must have a neutral conductor terminal. Without this, only illumination is possible.
Signalling contact for push-buttons? Push-buttons require a separate signalling contact so that the LED can indicate the switching state. Without this, no indication function is possible.
Rocker with control window? To make the LED visible, the rocker used must have a control window. With inserts without a window, the LED is active but not visible.
Power supply to consider Gira offers LED elements for 230 V~ and for low voltage (12–30 V~). The choice depends on the system used – e.g. with KNX or other low-voltage installations.

Installation and function: What you should consider

Insertion direction determines the function The LED elements can have different effects depending on the insertion direction (0° or 180°) – e.g. as an indication or illumination element. The exact function depends on the type and connection.
Not every insert supports LED elements Some switch inserts – e.g. rocker push-buttons without signalling contact – are not suitable for LED elements. Neither illumination nor indication works here.
Series switches require a special LED variant There is a specific LED version for series switches, as two circuits are controlled independently here.
